Nutty tale

I always knew you can expect absolutely anything in this city, but crack-addicted squirrels? Understand that humans here are wird, but animals too?

Stories involving drug abuse have recently dominated British newspapers. In late September, tales of Kate Moss, a supermodel, snorting cocaine with her rock-star boyfriend, Pete Doherty, were splashed across front pages. (Shocking, really, for Londoners to discover that rock-stars and supermodels snort cocaine.) And speculation continues over the refusal of David Cameron, a prospective Conservative Party leader, to say whether he took drugs before becoming an MP. Yet by far the most bizarre story surfaced in mid-October, alleging that squirrels in the south London borough of Brixton have become addicted to crack cocaine.

The evidence behind this new-found scourge is flimsy. Theory has it that a police crackdown on drug-dealing in the area has led some dealers to bury their stashes in residents' front gardens, where they are discovered by the hungry animals. One unnamed Brixtonian described one of the addicted squirrels foraging in his flower-beds: “It looked like it knew what it was looking for”, he said. “It was ill-looking and its eyes looked bloodshot but it kept on desperately digging.” These dubious reports were accompanied by assertions that crack-addicted squirrels are an “acknowledged problem” in American cities—though it seems likelier that urban myths are simply jumping national borders.

Yay! Go the squirrels!

Politics sucks

Just few days ago I learnt that Winston Peters became NZ's foreign minister. At first moment I thought it must have been some bad joke: remember us joking about this guy when I lived in Wellington: about his phobias towards foreigners and other things like that! Wonder how New Zealand plans to keep good relationships with other countries as the guy is famous of offending absolutely everybody!
Now it looks like this bad joke also happened to Poland! I just opened Polish info sites and they all announce that in today's presidential elections was won by Lech Kaczynski! It is like some nightmare to me! I couldn't take part in those elections (didn't take part in first round because I was in Italy so I wasn't entitled to take part in round two! What a ridiculous rule!) and to be frank any of the candidates was ideal to me. Second round's choice was between bad and worse.
And the worst won...
Described by newspapers as "right wing socialist" (yes, such idiotism can happen in Poland!) Kaczynski stands for social security (he likes especially French system which we all know fails miserably! Really good idea to introduce something like this in a country fighting with 18% unemployment!!!), centralisation of government, suppress the independence of Bank of Poland and quite strict foreign diplomacy (so ok, we have some issues with Russia and Germany recently, but I don't think that pretending that they don't exist to us will happen to solve those problems!!!). I don't remember now how many constitutional rights he broke when he delegalised the Parade of Sexual Equality as the president of Warsaw...

Somebody said that democracy can be very frustrating sometimes. Yes, I'm very dissappointed with my countrymen today's choice! One of those very, very rare occasions when I don't feel proud to be Polish...

Italy - part III

Yes, the Leaning Tower of Pisa doesn't stand alone and is only a part of a complex on Piazza de Miracoli (Square of Miracles). And even though the most famous, it's not the most beautiful.
And yes, sun doesn't always shine in Italy - still the place is gorgeous even when it rains!

Italy - part II

After all Tuscany looks all like I always imagined:

1) towns are all brown and red in colour, with quite similarly looking buildings

2) there is plenty of different vineyards are all over the place and olive trees grow absolutely everywhere!

3) local wine (chianti) is delicious;-)

4) people are all smiling and very, very nice! English is widely spoken but even those single cases who don’t speak the language of Shakespeare are trying to communicate with you using single words and gestures.

5) all those famous buildings (mainly cathedrals) really look breathtaking!

Have seen already Siena (Piazza del Campo is really stunning!), Volterra (quite high in the mountains – stunning views) and San Gimignano (many-towered hilltop town, my favourite so far). Today we’re chilling out on the beach and tomorrow there will be more sightseeing (among others will see the Leaning Tower of Pisa!)
